5th Training School, Valencia (Spain), March 2016

Cryopreservation of fish germ cells
Valencia (Spain), 7th-11th March, 2016

Scientific report

The 5th AQUAGAMETE Training School took place from 7th to 11th of March, 2016, in the facilities of the Universitat Politècnica de València and PROiSER S.L. (Spain). The course was organized by Juan F. Asturiano, Chair of this Action, and his group. A total of 21 trainees from 10 different countries attended the course, plus some local students who attended as auditors.
Theoretical lectures dealt about different topics related to cryopreservation and were given by 9 experts. Practical classes aimed to train students on techniques for sperm cryopreservation, microinjection of embryos and larvae, isolation of spermatogonia, and sperm quality evaluation by CASA.

Two technical visits were performed, one to the Albufera lagoon and surroundings, where participants enjoyed a boat ride with stops to visit the Tancat de la Pipa (environment preservation center), the Center for Preservation of Freshwater Species (Generalitat Valenciana) and the fishermen facilities in El Palmar, where they were invited to a talk about European eel fishing in Albufera lagoon. After a typical lunch in the village, they visited the Estany, Gola Pujol and Saler beach (natural exit way of migratory eels). The second technical visit was to PROiSER S.L., a company focused on research and development of automatic diagnostic systems, especially for sperm quality evaluation. There, participants were taught about CASA system and its use.
