Position as postdoctoral research fellow is available at the Dipartimento di Scienze della Vita e dell’Ambiente, Ancona, Italy, in the development /reproductive biology laboratory, supervisor Ike Olivotto.

We are searching for a highly motivated candidate with a strong interest in molecular biology/nanotechnologies applied to fish. The planned research makes use of chemical, molecular and biochemical techniques to investigate the effects of iron dioxide nanoparticles administration in zebrafish.  In particular, the effects on fish welfare, stress response, reproduction will be evaluated using different approaches.

Qualifications
Candidates for this fellowship will be selected in accordance to academic criteria, and expected to be in the upper segment of their class with respect to academic credentials.

Applicants must have a  MSc or a  PhD degree in biology and have experience in fish maintenance and molecular biology.

When evaluating the applications, emphasis will be given to their academic and personal abilities to carry out the project. The main purpose of post-doctoral research fellowships is to qualify researchers for work in top academic positions within their disciplines.

A good command of Italian/English is required.

Salary:

23.333,40 euros/year

The Profiling Of Fish Gonadal Ribosomal RNA

In the BCTA research group of the Department of Zoology and Cell Biology at the University of the Basque Country(UPV/EHU), we have been workin g in the field of ecotoxicology several years using various models of fish. In the most recent years we have tried to explain the usefulness of a new methodology for sexing fish which is based on ribosomal RNA electrophoretic-migration obtained by extraction of total RNA from gonad (Diaz de Cerio et al, 2012).
The 5S rRNA is more abundant in females than in males, so a simple electrophoresis helps us identifying sex without any histological process. We can also identify the female reproductive stage making a simple index of 5S / 18S rRNA that identifies previtellogenesis females, cortical alveoli, vitellogenesis or maturing stage. Moreover, the same analysis distinguishes intersex males (males with oocytes in testis) by the fact that the 5S rRNA is abundantly expressed in oocytes.
In our laboratory we have tested the technique in commercial species that commonly inhabit our coast: hake, flounder, anchovy, sardine, horse mackerel and mackerel (among others). To generalize the use of this methodology to other species, we need to prove that it is useful to fish species with different strategies and reproductive cycles.
An additional problem is that we lack intersex individual samples in species other than Chelon labrosus.
Recently, in the “5th International Workshop on the Biology of Fish Gametes 2015” held in Ancona (Italy), we have called for collaboration between laboratories to collect XDA files with the rRNA profiles of gonads of different species. These files are the results of the quality analysis of RNA using as an instrument the Agilent 2100 Bioanalyzer.
Therefore, we will be deeply grateful if you could participate in our initiative with your stored files and completing the information we require.

It is a great pleasure to announce the IMPRESS Genomics and Bioinformatics Workshop to be held in Leiden, The Netherlands, from 27 till 30 October 2015.

Aim: Open workshop for Marie Curie fellows and other interested scientists who wish to learn more about the field of genomics and bioinformatics, including sequencing and bioinformatics tools, genomics, transcriptomics and hands-on practice.
Program: A four-day workshop with keynote lectures and hands-on sections on processing of Nextgen sequencing data. A detailed preliminary program is shown on the reverse side.

As a result of a collaboration of Ákos Horvath and Elsa Cabrita with the Balkan Trout Restoration Group, in Tolmin (Slovenia), in the frame of the AQUAGAMETE COST Action, the following post was published in their blog: http://balkantrout.blogspot.hu/2015/06/a-pleasant-visit-in-april-akos-horvath.html. Our participants travelled to Slovenia to perform experiments on sperm cryopreservation of endemic species, such as huchen (Hucho hucho) and grayling (Thymallus thymallus).

The Journal of Applied Ichthyology has published in June a special issue (Vol. 31; Suppl. 1) containing the Proceedings of the 4th International Workshop on the Biology of Fish Gametes, held in Albufeira (Portugal) from 17th to 20th of September 2013, with the participation of 118 researchers from 24 countries.

IMPRESS counts with the participation of 9 European partners from Norway, Spain, France, Czech Republic, Germany, Netherlands and Israel, coordinated by the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU), Oslo, Norway.

IMPRESS offers international and interdisciplinary training to 15 predoctoral students in several European countries, with a very competitive salary and contacts within the industrial sector, governmental agencies and leading laboratories.
